My wonderful 8-year-old son has never, ever been a good sleeper. He seems to have my husband's body clock. He is a natural born "night owl" who goes from zero to overtired in 3.6 seconds. Once he gets that "second wind" -- it's as if he can't fall asleep -- even if he wants to! He would often be lying in his bed, with the lights off, late into the night, simply unable to fall asleep! He was so bored and I felt so bad for him, but I couldn't let him play - and I didn't know how to teach him to fall asleep! Similarly, my 5-year-old daughter used to fall asleep quickly and easily, but now she's been influenced by her big brother! She also loves to get "hypertired" before bedtime!
What's a busy, tired mom to do?
Search the internet for a solution, of course!
And so I did.
Luckily, I found an incredible audio set that not only taught my children how to fall asleep, but teaches them the skills of mindful awareness, and relaxation as well. It's called "Imagine Yourself...Energy Management For Kids: Skills to Slow & Quiet the Mind."
FYI: Mindfulness is the ability to be in the moment with your own mind on purpose and without judgement. Relaxation is the ability to calm our minds and bodies after all this energized activity. In our busy, fast-paced world -- these are vital skills for children (and moms) to develop!
I have to admit, at first, it was difficult for me to get the children to listen to the audio. They didn't want to hear it -- but I told them that it was important that they learn the skills of relaxing and falling asleep. Also, it was not optional! That first night, they interrupted the audio often, and I had to explain how to follow the instructions a bit...but over the course of a few nights -- they started to really enjoy the guided imagery in the audio. I knew that my efforts were worthwhile when one day my son returned home from school in a bad mood, and went to his room and listened to the cd. He said it really helped him to calm down!
Even though they don't use the CDs often anymore, it is noticably easier to put them to bed. They fall asleep faster and with less "help" from me. (Help = "Mommy! I can't fall asleep! Can I play?")
About the Product
The company that created this "miracle audio" is appropriately called "Resilency For Life" -- because, the skills of mindful awareness do, most certainly, help to create a more resilient, emotionally stable child. It could be helpful to help your child learn how to fall asleep on their own, but, according to the company, it also helps children with special needs (i.e. ADHD, Learning Disorders, ODD, Autism, Anxiety) gain added coping skills. While my children do not have those special needs, I could certainly see how these audios might benefit children who are dealing with those issues.
If your child his having trouble falling asleep at night, or could benefit from learning the skills of relaxation & mindful awareness, I highly recommend the audio set called "Imagine Yourself...Energy Management For Kids: Skills to Slow & Quiet the Mind."
