Last-Minute, Emergency Purim Costume Ideas for Kids

No time to run to the store for a Purim Costume? There is no need! You can make great costumes by using things you already have.  You are only limited by your imagination!

If you want to make a great costume you can:

- Look through your own closets old shirts & dresses that will work.
- Think about what you can glue onto a headband as a great accessory Consider dressing up a sweatsuit (great for animal costumes)
- Start with a cardboard box

Here are just a few costumes you can make with the easily accessible materials mentioned above:

Dress like a Nerd – With Some Help From Your Family!
Purim is the time to dress like something completely out of character. You can dress your child as a typical nerd, complete with an ill-fitting white shirt (try dad’s closet), pocket protectors (make one out of index cards!), pants that are too short (look in your little brothers closet!), glasses with tape in the corner, white socks and black dress shoes. Make sure you use plenty of hair gel to slick back the hair and a few overly large fake teeth will be a great addition if you have some.

Got A Cardboard Box – You have A Costume!

* Be a TV. Just take a black marker and draw a screen and some buttons onto the front. You can even take an old cord and glue it to the back of the box. Glue pictures of some of your favorite characters on the “screen.”
* Be a Computer – Same idea. Draw a screen on the front, and then glue a computer mouse (or even a furry mouse as a joke) to the side of the box.
* A Wrapped Gift - Wrap the entire box in gift wrap (whatever kind you like the best) and stick a bow on your child's head.

Be Frumpy Housewife!
Simply dress your child in a frumpy dress and apron or housecoat and slippers. Add hair rollers or a shower cap to her hair. And, add lots of BAD makeup!

Be A Magician

This costume can be adorable as well as quick and easy! If your child has a pair of black pants, he can borrow one of daddy’s white dress shirts and you can make a bowtie out of construction paper. Then, all you need is a Top Hat (or make one by wrapping another hat in black construction paper).

Be A Bunny!

Dress your child in a white or brown sweatsuit. If your sweatsuit came with a hood, this costume is about as easy as it gets! You’ll just stick the  ears to the hood with some double-sided tape. Otherwise, you can use a headband and glue the felt ears to the headband.

To make the felt ears, cut 4 large rabbit ears out of the brown or white felt or posterboard and glue two of them together to make it sturdier. Cut two smaller ear shapes out of  pink felt  or posterboard and glue it in the center of each of the larger ears.

Glue a large pompom on the back of your child’s pants and your little rabbit is ready to hop along.

Hint: If you have two children, it would be adorable to dress one as the Magician  and one as the Bunny!

Invite your child to help with making his or her costume. Spending time creating these costumes together may end up being just as much fun as eating the Shaloch Manos! Be sure to take lots of pictures.
