Julies Solutions Part 3: Ya Gotta Have GirlFriends!

Please note: This is the continuation of a response to a comment left on the blog asking for some suggestions.  You can read the original post, as well as Part 1, 2 & 2a of my answer, below.

Dear Julie,

I bet you weren't expecting all of that!  Well, I hope some of it was helpful!

I have just one more subject I want to  cover. In your comment your mentioned that "My husband works 3 nights a week, which is often difficult for me."  And I do understand how difficult that is!  My husband also works days and 3-4 nights a week -- and its not fun!  Not only do I miss him, but I find that it is very easy to let myself get isolated as well - and that ain't no good for anyone!

I've learned  that women have a SCIENTIFIC, BIOLOGICAL NEED for  "Girls Night Out."

No Joke!

Time to reconnect with grown-ups is so important for women. You see,  men react to stress with the  "Fight-or-flight" response. In other words,  when confronted by stress, men will  either react with aggressive behavior – such a verbal conflict or physical fighting or flee from the stressful situation.    New studies are showing women do not respond to stress with the "fight or flight" response.  Rather Women,  react to stress by “tending and befriending.” According to a landmark study by the University of California, when women are stressed, they move toward caregiving and connecting with friends with whom they get relief.  (Big surprise right?) This emotional soothing increases the production of the hormone oxytocin, which reduces stress and enhances relaxation.

So you see, it's especially important, that if you're husband isn't regularly available for some "tending and befriending" that you make sure to get connect with your girlfriends during the week.  Being at home with two little ones is stressful -- and being all alone doesn't help at all!  So do what you can to get a list of babysitters you can call so that you get out at least once a week with a friend. Or, simply pick up the phone for a good chat.  It's not a waste of time -- it's part of your perscription for good health, stress relief and sanity!

Trust me, I know from my own, personal experience!
