My Solution for Procrastination...
Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 11:37PM When I find myself, or my coaching clients, procrastinating something important, I usually ask the following series of questions:
First, Ask yourself:
1) What am I avoiding? Get clear & specific about it. Often we think we are avoiding a whole project, when we are often avoiding only part of a project & when that part is done the rest can/will go smoothly.
Then Get Really Clear About:
2) Why am I avoiding it?
Generally the Reasons we avoid completing certain projects fall into the following categories:
- You just don’t want to do it! – Can you delegate it or just not do it? (if not see # 3 and 4 below.)
- You don’t have the right resources & have to search for them – Then you must schedule time to get the resources you need.
- You are afraid of the consequences if you do finish the task – Ask yourself: What is the worst case scenario? Can you handle that? Strategize about a solution, because there will probably be worse consequences if you continue to procrastinate!
- You are afraid of failure – If you don't do it, you will have failed anyway. (The fear will have won) So Feel the fear and take action anyway!
So...once you've figured out why you are avoiding a certain task...maybe you are STILL not motivated to do it. If so, ask yourself:
- What would make you want to do it? - Perhaps a reward after you’ve completed the task or part of task?
- What would make it easier to do? - Perhaps some music? Your favorite movie in the background? Something yummy to snack on?
- How will I feel when I am done? Really connect with the feeling & you may find it to be a great motivator.
And if all else fails...
Call a friend, or your life coach, and ask her to hold you accountable to finishing the task!
